Recovery Time Testing: Because A Cleanroom Must Heal Fast—Not Just Stay Clean

In cleanroom engineering, we often say: "It's not if contamination happens-it's when." Doors open. Equipment moves. People enter. Spikes in particle counts are inevitable. What really matters is how quickly your cleanroom bounces back. That's where recovery time testing comes in-and it's one of the most revealing performance checks we run.

Recovery time is defined as the period it takes for a cleanroom to return from a deliberately induced "polluted" state to its specified cleanliness class (e.g., ISO 5 or ISO 7). To test it, we introduce a controlled aerosol challenge-typically using PAO or potassium chloride-until particle concentrations exceed the class limit by a significant margin. Then we shut off the source and start the clock, continuously monitoring particles with a calibrated counter until levels stabilize within acceptable limits.

Why does this matter? Because recovery time reflects your system's real-world resilience. A room that takes 30 minutes to recover might be fine for low-risk compounding-but in aseptic filling, regulators like the FDA expect recovery in under 20 minutes, often much faster. Slow recovery usually points to insufficient air changes, poor airflow distribution, or leaks in the envelope.

We once worked with a client whose cleanroom passed all static tests-but failed recovery in under 40 minutes. The culprit? A blocked return grille masked by "good average" airflow numbers. After fixing it, recovery dropped to 12 minutes.

We always perform this test during commissioning and after major modifications. It's not just about compliance-it's proof your cleanroom can handle the messiness of real operations.

So yes, your cleanroom should be clean. But more importantly, it should be quick to recover. Because in critical environments, minutes don't just matter-they protect patients, products, and your license to operate. And that's a metric we never leave to chance.
